Background of the study
Nigerian Pidgin has emerged as a dynamic linguistic medium, particularly in the creative realms of Nollywood. This study appraises how scriptwriters employ innovative sentence structures to craft compelling narratives that resonate with diverse audiences (Abiola, 2023). Nigerian Pidgin, known for its flexibility and expressiveness, has undergone significant transformations due to media influences and cultural exchanges. Nollywood scriptwriters are at the forefront of this linguistic evolution, experimenting with syntactic forms to enhance dramatic effect and audience engagement (Ifeanyi, 2024). By analyzing a corpus of contemporary film scripts, this research uncovers patterns of syntactic innovation that diverge from standard linguistic norms. The investigation focuses on how unconventional sentence structures, such as fragmented clauses, ellipsis, and creative reordering of syntactic elements, contribute to narrative style and humor. Recent discourse in language innovation suggests that such syntactic creativity not only reflects societal changes but also drives the evolution of the language itself (Ugo, 2025). This study thus provides a comprehensive view of how language is reshaped in the creative process, offering insights into the broader implications for cultural expression and media studies.
Statement of the problem
There is a dearth of scholarly work that systematically examines the syntactic innovations in Nigerian Pidgin as used by Nollywood scriptwriters. Existing research primarily focuses on lexical and semantic shifts, neglecting the sentence-level structures that contribute to narrative dynamism. Preliminary findings indicate that these innovative structures may challenge conventional grammatical frameworks and hinder critical analysis of scriptwriting practices. The problem lies in understanding how these innovations are integrated into mainstream communication and what impact they have on audience reception. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a detailed analysis of syntactic modifications, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on language evolution in media contexts.

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is pivotal in understanding how creative language use in media influences broader linguistic trends. The findings will inform both academic research and practical applications in scriptwriting and film production, enhancing cultural expression in Nigerian cinema (Ede, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the analysis of sentence structure innovations in Nigerian Pidgin as used by Nollywood scriptwriters. It focuses on a selected corpus of film scripts and does not consider other genres or informal media.
